Job Description

The purpose of this role is to develop, direct, and complete projects involving historical archaeology and/or historic-age built environment resources (e.g., canals, roads, etc.). Projects may be located nationwide; however, it is anticipated that the majority will be in the U.S. Southwest, Great Basin region, and/or California. Below is a list of duties for this position.

Duties:

1. Perform archival research and/or conduct site file searches at federal, state, tribal, and private repositories.
2. Develop, direct, and participate in Class III survey involving historic resources and/or NRHP assessment and/or documentation of historic resources.
3. Perform construction monitoring.
4. Work collaboratively with the company’s Architectural History Group to prepare historic preservation documents, including architectural inventories; historic building assessments and structure reports; National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) documentation; Historic American Engineering Record (HAER)/Historic American Building Survey (HABS)/Historic American Landscape Survey (HALS) documentation; cultural landscape documentation; historic context studies; and treatment documents.
5. Prepare, review, and/or edit technical reports documenting and synthesizing the results of research as well as field and lab work.
6. Consider, document, and make recommendations regarding findings of project effect and appropriate means of avoidance, minimization, and/or mitigation.
7. Coordinate preparation of report figures with GIS staff.
8. Analyze historic artifacts.
9. Develop and adhere to project scopes and budgets.
10. Assist with marketing and business development.
11. Understand and assist clients with state, federal, and tribal cultural resources compliance.
12. Work independently and resolve project challenges with minimal supervision.
13. Communicate effectively and work closely with fellow employees, clients, vendors, and the public.
14. Perform travel that may include overnight and/or out-of-state stays for extended periods of time.

Job Qualifications (Education, Experience, and Skills):

1. Minimum Education: Master’s degree in anthropology, archaeology, or a closely related field (Ph.D. preferred).
2. Minimum of eight (8) years of experience in Cultural Resource Management (CRM) and a minimum of two (2) years of experience supervising and managing projects.
3. Thorough understanding of U.S. Southwest, California, and/or Great Basin history and applicable federal and state cultural resource management/historic preservation laws.
4. Ability to be added to archaeological permits on state, federal, and tribal lands in the U.S. Southwest and Great Basin region.
5. Experience preparing research designs, work plans, and technical reports that meet state and federal standards and guidelines.
6. Successful management and completion of projects on time and within budget.
7. Experience using GPS and GIS applications (Tablet, ArcGIS Pro).
8. Able to work well independently as well as in a team environment.
9. Possess strong attention to detail and excellent recordkeeping skills.
10. Ability to perform fieldwork in adverse conditions (e.g., rugged terrain, remote locations, hot and cold temperatures, dense vegetation) and carry up to 25 pounds of equipment.
11. Possess strong written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated ability to communicate complex information to a wide variety of audiences.
12. Valid Driver's License, with the ability to maintain insurability under the company's insurance carrier.

This position will require general supervision and will have to use independent judgment within established guidelines. Generally uses the advanced knowledge to analyze, interpret, or make deductions from varying facts or circumstances. Will need the ability to establish rapport quickly with others working on the same project, and be able to promote a positive team environment.
