The ideal candidate holds a professional Architecture degree, Wisconsin licensure or reciprocity, 5+ years in historic preservation, and strong skills in documentation, restoration planning, BIM/drafting and coordination with consultants.

HISTORIC PRESERVATION ARCHITECT - WISCONSIN

My client is an established architecture and preservation consultancy delivering thoughtful, context-sensitive projects across Wisconsin. The practice works with building owners, community organizations, municipalities and private clients to preserve historically significant properties while adapting them for continued and sustainable use.

Their work combines architectural design with specialist preservation services, including existing-condition assessments, feasibility studies, historic structures reports, restoration planning, construction documentation and regulatory coordination.

With continued demand for their preservation expertise, they are seeking a licensed Historic Preservation Architect who can contribute technically, manage projects and work directly with clients and project stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead historic preservation, rehabilitation, restoration and adaptive reuse projects from initial assessment through construction.
• Conduct site investigations, building assessments, field documentation and research into historic materials, systems and construction methods.
• Prepare feasibility studies, historic structures reports, restoration recommendations, architectural drawings, specifications and technical documentation.
• Develop design solutions that preserve historic character while addressing accessibility, life safety, building performance, sustainability and modern-use requirements.
• Coordinate with owners, municipalities, preservation organizations, consultants, contractors and regulatory authorities throughout project delivery.
• Guide projects through applicable local, state and federal preservation review processes.
• Apply the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties and other relevant preservation guidelines.
• Support National Register nominations, historic resource surveys, Section 106 reviews and other preservation documentation where required.
• Manage project scope, schedules, budgets, consultant coordination and client communication.
• Provide construction administration, including site observations, submittal reviews, responses to contractor questions and evaluation of existing conditions discovered during construction.
• Contribute to quality control and provide technical guidance to architectural staff working on preservation-focused projects.

Qualifications

• Professional degree in Architecture from an accredited program.
• Professional architectural registration required, with Wisconsin licensure or the ability to obtain reciprocity.
• Approximately 5+ years of architectural experience, including meaningful involvement in historic preservation, restoration, rehabilitation or adaptive reuse projects.
• Strong understanding of traditional building materials, historic construction methods, deterioration mechanisms and compatible repair approaches.
• Working knowledge of preservation standards, approval processes, historic research and documentation requirements.
• Experience producing coordinated construction drawings, technical specifications and project documentation.
• Proficiency with architectural drafting, BIM, visualization and document-production software.
• Ability to assess existing buildings, recognize underlying conditions and translate field findings into practical architectural solutions.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the confidence to work directly with clients, consultants, contractors and public stakeholders.
• Organized and detail-oriented approach, with the ability to manage several projects and priorities concurrently.
• Experience with historic tax credit projects, National Register documentation, Section 106 consultation or grant-supported preservation work would be beneficial.
