Job Description - Histology Technician (250921)

Hennepin Healthcare is an integrated system of care that includes HCMC, a nationally recognized Level I Adult Trauma Center and Level I Pediatric Trauma Center, along with an acute care hospital and a network of clinics across Minneapolis and Hennepin County. Summary:

We are seeking a Histology Technician to join our team. This full-time role involves working days, including every 6th weekend (off Monday, work Saturday).

Purpose of this position: Under direct supervision, performs histology testing of moderate to complex difficulty and/or grossing of routine, simple surgical tissue samples. Uses specialized equipment and processes according to established procedures, demonstrating patient- and family-centered care behaviors.

Responsibilities:

Histology:

  • Embed surgical and ME tissue, perform microtomy at various thicknesses, conduct routine H&E staining, special staining, and immunohistochemical staining following protocols.
  • Gross small biopsies and other specimens suitable for submission, assist with frozen section preparation and photography, process requests and referrals, and assist with hospital autopsies.
  • Perform cryotomy of specimens for optimal tissue structure demonstration, and immunofluorescence staining on frozen sections.
  • Provide microtomy services to internal and external labs upon request.
  • Assist in training and instructing new employees, students, and residents.
  • Perform quality control, maintain instruments, and troubleshoot as needed.
  • Manage specimens sent to reference laboratories and ensure proper billing charges.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Completion of a NAACLS-approved Laboratory Histology Technician training program.
  • OR experience as an Electron Microscopy Technician.
  • OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One year of relevant experience.
  • Ability to work independently and self-motivated.
  • Ability to work respectfully and effectively with a diverse workforce and patient population.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Detail-oriented with strong attention to accuracy.
  • Ability to read and follow written instructions.

License/Certifications:

For Histology and Grossing Technicians:

  • Certified or eligible as a Histology Technician (ASCP) or Histology Technologist (ASCP).
  • Hired individuals who are eligible must take and pass the certification exam within three attempts over 12 months.
