Health Sciences Core Research Facilities - Pennsylvania-Pittsburgh - (26005733)

The Pitt Biospecimen Core Histology Lab is an institutional research resource that supports University of Pittsburgh and UPMC faculty through high-quality tissue processing, paraffin embedding, sectioning, staining support, tissue microarray construction, and related histology services. Located within Shadyside Hospital, with satellite pick-up and drop-off stations at Scaife Hall and Magee-Women’s Hospital, the lab supports research activity across the University’s campus and affiliated clinical research sites. The Research Histology Technician – Laboratory Manager I supports the full lifecycle of histology laboratory operations, from project accessioning, cassette labeling, slide printing, processing, embedding, routine and frozen sectioning, and project compilation to distribution and submission for whole slide imaging through the Digital Pathology Resource Center. The incumbent works independently and collaboratively on routine and complex research projects, applying histological guidelines and customer requirements while maintaining workflow, turnaround time, sample integrity, and service quality. This role also provides technical and operational support for specialized laboratory workflows, including gross dissection, review of control tissues for histochemical staining, immunohistochemical staining, TUNEL assays, and construction of tissue microarrays from submitted samples and identification lists. The incumbent uses laboratory-integrated software to accession projects, support billing accuracy, track pending work, maintain supply and chemical inventories, program and maintain equipment, monitor chemical waste disposal, and assist laboratory management with troubleshooting, process improvement, and workflow enhancements, order and manage laboratory supplies. Success in this position requires strong attention to detail, effective communication with management, team members, and customers, sound organizational judgment, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a high-volume research service environment.

Physical Effort

The role also requires walking between Shadyside Hospital, Hillman Cancer Center, and The Assembly building; standing and sitting for extended periods at the bench; reading small print on cassettes, sample identification lists, and labels; and lifting up to 30 pounds. Working under standard lab building lighting all day. Bending and lifting to put away lab supplies.
