Job summary

Tri-County Community Action Agency in Johnston, RI is seeking a Release of Information Specialist to manage medical records requests for government and insurers, ensuring accuracy and HIPAA compliance.

This full-time role requires 2+ years of EMR experience, RHIT preferred, and familiarity with NextGen; strong attention to privacy laws and customer service are essential. You will process subpoenas, log PHI access, coordinate with providers, and support health information management activities.

Qualifications

• Associate degree in Health Information Management or related field.
• RHIT credential preferred.
• 2+ years’ experience with medical records procedures and/or electronic medical records.
• Knowledge of Release of Information processes and HIPAA/privacy regulations.
• Experience with Microsoft Office products.
• Experience with medical terminology and EMR systems.
• Working knowledge of NextGen products (PM, EHR, etc.).

Responsibilities

• Receives and reviews requests from multiple channels and determines release eligibility.
• Maintains knowledge of state statutes and release of information fees.
• Analyzes requests, abstracts pertinent information, and safeguards confidentiality.
• Releases restricted information per policy, and tracks PHI access in NextGen.
• Processes subpoenas, court orders, and prepares copies for legal matters.
• Logs all requests, and handles mail, faxes, and phone inquiries promptly.
• Provides coverage for staff and supports health information management goals.
• Participates in quality improvement activities and maintains HIPAA compliance.
