Job summary

Northwell Health seeks an Information Release Specialist to process all medical record releases promptly and accurately, safeguarding patient privacy under HIPAA. The role ensures access is limited to authorized individuals and delivers high-quality customer service.

Responsibilities include reviewing requests, data entry, determining records to release, coordinating with departments and storage vendors, and handling walk-in customers and inquiries.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
• Certification in Health Information Management (RHIT or RHIA) is preferred, but not required.

Responsibilities

• Reviews and validates requests for the release of medical information according to established departmental policies and procedures.
• Scans and enters requests into the appropriate release of the information database application in preparation for processing.
• Determines records to be released by reviewing requestor information following departmental and HIPAA guidelines.
• Coordinates and communicates with applicable departments and/or off-site record storage vendors to obtain portions of the medical record that apply to the requested information.
• Processes approved requests following departmental policies & procedures while ensuring medical privacy and compliance is maintained to guard against unauthorized disclosures.
• Assists with various related administrative duties such as servicing walk-in customers, and processing incoming faxes, mail, telephone inquiries, and internal requests for information.
