We are seeking an experienced Health Information Management (HIM) professional to support onsite HIM operations across hospital locations in the Austin, TX area.
This position will serve as a key onsite point of contact between the HIM team, operational leadership, hospital staff, and client stakeholders. The role is heavily focused on training coordination, competency development, process improvement, communication, and Birth Registration operations.
This is not a traditional people-management position involving hiring, firing, or timecard management. Instead, this individual will act as a day-to-day operational lead, help support and develop associates, identify training and process gaps, and elevate concerns to leadership when appropriate.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as a primary onsite HIM point of contact for hospital and operational stakeholders.
- Coordinate and oversee training schedules for new and existing associates.
- Support onboarding and training of new hires within HIM operations.
- Conduct or coordinate competency checks to ensure associates understand required processes.
- Work side-by-side with trainers and associates to understand workflows and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Review training materials and identify gaps, inconsistencies, or opportunities to strengthen training.
- Provide real-time coaching and feedback to associates.
- Support training related to Birth Registration and Birth Record processes.
- Attend operational meetings and effectively communicate HIM-related information and terminology.
- Present operational information, metrics, and data to groups, including leadership and executive stakeholders.
- Communicate with hospital departments and other stakeholders by phone and in person.
- Support Release of Information and other general HIM-related processes.
- Ensure HIM practices align with HIPAA requirements and healthcare privacy standards.
- Identify operational or employee-related concerns and elevate them to leadership appropriately.
- Support multiple Austin-area hospital locations as needed.
- Occasionally assist with review of individual patient records or site-specific HIM concerns.
- Help ensure the onsite team and training processes operate effectively in a fast-paced hospital environment.
Required Qualifications
- Active RHIA or RHIT certification – required.
- 3+ years of HIM and/or clinical healthcare experience.
- Previous experience working in a hospital or clinical environment.
- Experience with Release of Information (ROI).
- Strong knowledge of HIPAA regulations and HIM practices.
- Experience working with an electronic health record system.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Comfortable speaking with hospital leadership, operational stakeholders, and multiple departments.
- Comfortable presenting information and data in group settings.
- Experience providing coaching, feedback, training, or guidance to staff.
- Ability to identify workflow or training gaps and recommend improvements.
- Ability to work independently and serve as an onsite operational point of contact.
- Comfortable working in patient-facing areas when necessary.
Preferred Qualifications
- Cerner experience strongly preferred.
- Epic experience is also valuable and transferable.
- Previous experience with Birth Registration or Birth Certificate processes.
- Birth Certificate/Birth Registration qualification or certification.
- Experience training new hires or conducting competency assessments.
- Experience presenting operational data or information to leadership.
- Experience supporting multiple hospital locations.
The consultant will primarily support hospital locations in the Austin area, including the Seton Medical Center/downtown Austin area. The current schedule is expected to include one Austin-area location on Mondays and the primary hospital location Tuesday through Friday.
The HIM teams operate across multiple sites and support hospital operations seven days per week; however, this position will primarily work a standard Monday–Friday schedule.
