Job summary

Avera McKennan Hospital is seeking an HIM Specialist to manage the recording, dissemination, and processing of the medical record. You will scan, upload, verify documents, and ensure data quality while communicating with internal departments, staff, and physicians.

Responsibilities include chart integrity, handling requests for information, abstracting data into the EHR, and assisting with vital records duties. Prior HIM experience is preferred and adherence to HIPAA is required.

Qualifications

• The individual must be able to work the hours specified and perform essential functions with attention to detail.
• Ability to communicate effectively with patients, staff and external contacts.
• Maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and applicable laws.

Responsibilities

• Retrieve records and documentation from departments to form an accurate medical record.
• Process records for scanning/uploading, verify images and assign patient IDs.
• Greet and assist patients in the HIM customer service area and handle inquiries.
• Analyze electronic health records for quality, identify deficiencies, and coordinate with staff to resolve issues.
• Assist with patient identity edits, merges, and data entry into the EHR.
• Prepare birth certificate documents and notarize state forms in accordance with requirements.
• Maintain productivity and quality standards and uphold safety policies.
• Uphold HIPAA and other legal/privacy standards.
