Hiring for 2 positions based out of the Menahga, MN shop. Applications must be submitted by May 29th.
The Highway Department Maintenance Worker III is responsible to inspect, maintain and repair county roadways, right of ways, bridges, related structures and highway maintenance equipment to provide for the safety and adequate travel and accessibility for the public. This position includes aspects of road maintenance, heavy equipment operation, equipment maintenance, tool use, construction, and traffic control.
Duties And Responsibilities
- Maintains and repairs Wadena County roadways and bridges including grading surfaces, laying down gravel, hauling gravel and blacktop, paving roads, patching holes, clearing rights-of-way, repairing culverts and maintaining roadway shoulders. This includes snow removal and applying ice control materials.
- Operates heavy equipment, vehicles and tools.
- Maintains maintenance equipment and vehicles and ensures compliance with DOT, OSHA and MSHA regulations.
- Inspects physical condition and placement of road signs and repairs or replaces as necessary
- Mows grass, trims and removes trees and brush, and removes other natural obstructions from roadways and right-of-way.
- Prepare trails for campground entrances
- Installs culverts, centerline pipes and driveways. Cleans and mows ditches.
- Conducts traffic control operations during road maintenance and road closures.
- Available for snow, ice and other emergencies.
- Performs computer data entry
- Attends training, educational and staff meetings as assigned.
While these are the primary focus of the position, we believe strongly in teamwork and employees will be called upon to perform a variety of duties as part of their role with the County.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
- Knowledge and skill of proper and safe operation, servicing and maintenance of tools and equipment
- Knowledge of local and state laws and regulations regarding the operation of equipment, particularly those pertaining to operation on public streets.
- Working knowledge of weed and brush control practices and the application of chemicals.
- Knowledge of roadway construction, maintenance and repair. Knowledge and skill in proper snow and ice removal techniques.
- Familiarity with OSHA and relevant Department of Labor laws and requirements
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
- Ability to respond to calls for service outside of normal work schedule
- Ability to work under limited supervision with general autonomy in determining how objectives are achieved
- Ability to communicate and maintain relationships with department staff, other departments, contractors, the general public etc. to relay basic information or facts.
Education And Experience
- Requires a high school degree or equivalent
- At least one year relevant experience or training beyond high school

This position will require the acquisition and maintenance of the following additional certificates/licenses, depending on individual position assignments:
- Minnesota Commercial Driver’s License Class A minimum license requirement at time of hire and must maintain

Physical And Mental Requirements
This job typically requires sitting, standing, walking, crouching, feeling, manual dexterity, grasping, talking, driving, lifting, hearing, typing, and seeing. This position is generally heavy duty and may require the exertion up to 60 pounds of force and intermittently ability to lift, carry, push, pull and move objects up to 60 pounds.
