Job summary

South Carolina Department of Transportation seeks a skilled Equipment Operator to operate tandem dump trucks, large rollers, and skid steers for roadway maintenance. The role involves patching, trimming, signage, pavement markings, and roadside upkeep across multiple sites.

Responsibilities include flagging traffic, placing traffic control devices per MUTCD, and performing pre-trip inspections. A Class A CDL must be obtained within six months.

Qualifications

• Six (6) months of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence.
• A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
• Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement.
• The physical demands include lifting up to 50 lbs and traversing uneven terrain.

Responsibilities

• Operate tandem dump truck, large roller (4 tons), and skid steer loader.
• Perform maintenance tasks such as patching, limb and brush trimming, sign and pavement markings, shoulder and ditch maintenance.
• Flag traffic in low and high volume areas and assist in placing traffic control devices per MUTCD.
• Conduct pre-trip equipment/vehicle inspections and ensure fleet safety in accordance with department rules.
• Perform duties during inclement weather and after-hours emergencies as required.

Job Responsibilities

Operates equipment to include tandem dump truck, large roller (4 tons), and skid steer loader. Perform common maintenance activities such as patching, limb and brush trimming, sign and pavement marking maintenance, shoulder and ditches. Flags traffic in low and high volume areas to control flow of traffic for protection of workers, equipment and general public during maintenance operations. Assist in the placement of traffic control devices in accordance with the MUTCD manual. Works with a crew of maintenance employees utilizing proper maintenance techniques, while performing duties using manual labor during roadway and right of way maintenance activities. Areas of work may include but are not limited to, signage and pavement markings, driveway installation and maintenance, construction of drainage appurtenances, litter/debris removal, vegetation management, bridge maintenance, patching and paving. Operates small equipment, power tools and hand tools to perform assigned maintenance activities. Conducts and documents pre-trip equipment/vehicle inspection in accordance with the Department's most current rules, policies and procedures according to fleet safety. Operates standard dump truck with snow plow and attachment and salt spreader to remove snow and ice from roadways and bridges. Performs duties requested during inclement weather events and on-call services for after-hour emergencies. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

Six (6) months of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position. The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
