Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation seeks a skilled equipment operator to perform manual labor and operate medium duty equipment such as tandem dump trucks, belt loaders and rollers for road and bridge maintenance.

Duties include grading, setting forms, pouring/finishing concrete for curbs and sidewalks, repairing potholes, managing vegetation, and placing traffic control devices for safe work zones.

Qualifications

• Six months of related work experience or approved equivalence.
• A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
• Must attain a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six months of placement.

Responsibilities

• Operate medium duty equipment (tandem dump truck, belt loader, large roller) for road and bridge maintenance.
• Perform grading, setting forms, pouring/finishing concrete for curbs, gutters, sidewalks, and driveways.
• Repair potholes and base surface failures; perform vegetation management and litter pickup.
• Set up and document traffic control in work zones; inspect equipment and vehicles per safety rules.

Job description

Performs skilled manual labor and operates medium duty equipment such as tandem dump truck, belt loader and large roller in a variety of activities associated with the construction, repair and preservation of roads and bridges on the state highway system. Examples include grading, setting forms, pouring/finishing concrete for curbs, gutters, sidewalks and driveways. Performs work on shoulders, ditches, drainage structures, pavement markings, etc. Repairs potholes and base surface failures of roadway using hand tools such as shovel, pick, rake and asphalt lute to level asphalt as needed. Conducts the placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone according to the SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide to warn motorists. Performs a variety of vegetation management activities using equipment such as weed eater, hedger, other gas/electric power tools and hand tools to perform these duties. Picks up litter, debris and dead animals. Conducts and documents pre-trip equipment/vehicle inspection in accordance with the Department's most current rules, policies and procedures for fleet safety. Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations, to include operating medium duty equipment. May include being available for extended working hours or 12 hour shifts. Performs other related duties as assigned.

The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
