Job summary

South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking a maintenance worker to perform roadway and right-of-way maintenance. Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Operate equipment such as tandem dump truck, large roller (4 tons), and skid loader.
  • Perform maintenance tasks: patching, sign and pavement marking maintenance, shoulder and ditch work.
  • Flag traffic to protect workers and public during maintenance operations.
  • Place traffic control devices in accordance with MUTCD.
  • Conduct pre-trip inspections of equipment/vehicles as required by department rules.
  • Respond to inclement weather, after-hour emergencies, and on-call requests.
  • Assist in general roadway and right-of-way maintenance activities.

Job description

Works with crew of maintenance employees utilizing proper maintenance techniques, while performing duties using manual labor during roadway and right of way maintenance activities. Areas of work may include but are not limited to, signage and pavement markings, driveway installation and maintenance, construction of drainage appurtenances, litter/debris removal, vegetation management, bridge maintenance, patching and paving. Operates equipment to include tandem dump truck, large roller (4 tons), and skid loader. Flag traffic in low and high volume areas to control flow of traffic for protection of workers, equipment and general public during maintenance operations. Assist in the placement of traffic control devices in accordance with MUTCD manual. Perform common maintenance activities such as patching, limb and brush trimming, sign and pavement marking maintenance, shoulder and ditches. Conducts and documents pre-trip equipment/vehicle inspection in accordance with the Department's most current rules, policies and procedures according to fleet safety. Operates small equipment, power tools and hand tools to perform assigned maintenance activities. Operates standard dump truck with snow plow and attachment and salt spreader to remove snow and ice from roadways and bridges. Performs duties requested during inclement weather events and on-call services for after hour emergencies. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Six (6) months of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.


The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
