Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking a skilled laborer to support road and bridge construction, repair, and preservation on the state highway system.

You will operate medium equipment, assist with grading, concrete work, drainage, and traffic control setups, and work extended hours or 12-hour shifts as needed. A valid CDL Class A license is required within six months of placement.

Responsibilities

• Operate medium equipment (tandem dump truck, large roller >4 tons, skid steer) for road/bridge work.
• Assist in grading, forming, pouring/finishing concrete for curbs, gutters, sidewalks and driveways.
• Coordinate placement of traffic control devices and signs for work zones per SCOOT guidelines.
• Perform vegetation management and litter/debris cleanup; assist in emergencies and inclement weather operations.

Job description

Job Responsibilities

Performs skilled manual labor and operates medium equipment such as, but not limited to: tandem dump truck, large roller >4 tons, and skid steer loader in a variety of activities associated with the construction, repair, and preservation of roads and bridges on the state highway system. Examples include grading, setting forms, pouring/finishing concrete for curbs, gutters, sidewalks, and driveways; performs work on shoulders, ditches, drainage structures, pavement markings, etc. Coordinates the placement of traffic control devices/signs to property set up maintenance work zones according to SCOOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide to warn motorists. Operates power tools breaking out sidewalks and curbs for driveway construction and repair. Performs a variety of vegetation management activities using equipment such as complex mowers and powered hand tools. Picks up litter, debris and dead animals. Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations. May include working extended hours or 12-hour shifts. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

Six (6) months of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
