Job summary

South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking a heavy equipment operator to maintain roadways and assist with construction and repair projects. Responsibilities

• Operates tandem dump truck, skid steer and large roller.
• Loads and hauls material to and from the jobsite.
• Assists in operating backhoe, motor grader, slope mower, boom mower and excavator.
• Uses hand and power tools for maintenance activities.
• Flags traffic and sets up work zones to protect workers, public and equipment.
• Performs pre-trip vehicle/equipment inspections and reports deficiencies.
• Works in inclement weather, including snow and ice removal with truck-mounted plows and sand spreaders.
• May be required to work outside normal schedule during emergencies and on-call operations.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

Six (6) months of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position. Physical Requirement: The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
