Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking a maintenance worker to operate and maintain medium duty equipment and perform statewide roadway maintenance tasks.

The role requires a valid driver’s license, a Class A CDL within six months of placement, and at least six months of related experience. You must be physically able to lift up to 50 lbs and be ready to work outside normal hours during weather events or emergencies.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Operates and maintains medium duty equipment such as tandem dump trucks, skid steer, self-propelled belt loaders and tractor with large mower.
• Performs roadway maintenance tasks including clearing right-of-ways, repairing shoulders, potholes, base repairs, bridges, paving driveways and laying pipe.
• Flags traffic during road repairs to protect workers and the public.
• Operates 5 to 10 yard dump trucks for hauling materials like asphalt, limestone, dirt, soil, cement, pipe and debris.
• Uses electric/gas powered tools (chain saws, pole saw) and hand tools in roadway maintenance.
• Assists in emergencies and inclement weather operations, potentially outside normal hours; on-call status 24 hours.
• Assists in operating backhoe, excavator, motor grader, slope mower, spreader, ditcher and front-end loader.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Operates and maintains medium duty equipment such as tandem dump trucks, skid steer, self-propelled belt loaders and tractor with large mower. Performs duties using manual labor, in such maintenance as clearing of the right-of ways, cleaning drainage ditches, repairing shoulders, patching potholes, making base repairs, repairs to bridges, paving driveways and laying sideline/cross line pipe. Flags traffic during road repairs to control flow of traffic to protect workers, motoring public and equipment. Operates 5 to 10 yard standard dump truck for hauling materials such as asphalt, limestone, dirt, soil, cement, pipe, construction materials and debris. Operates and maintains electric/gas powered tools including chain saws and pole saws and uses hand tools in various phases of roadway maintenance. Assists in emergencies and inclement weather operations which may include working hours outside of normal work schedule. When crew is in an "on-call" status, employee is available 24 hours a day. Assists in the operation of backhoe, excavator, motor grader, slope mower, spreader, tractor with ditcher and front-end loader. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Physical Requirement: The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
