South Carolina DDSN is seeking a Maintenance Worker to perform road and bridge upkeep on the state highway system, including mowing, brush management, line-of-sight clearing, and traffic control setup.
The role requires working outdoors, lifting up to 50 lbs, operating a tandem dump truck and a tractor with a large mower, and obtaining a Class A CDL within six months of placement.
Performs skilled manual labor in a variety of activities associated with construction, repair, and preservation of roads and bridges on the state highway system. Examples include mowing, brush management, and clearing line of sight. Uses hand tools. Performs general highway maintenance worker functions and operates medium equipment such as tandem dump truck to load and haul materials needed for maintenance operations and tractor with large mower (>10' wide) for controlling vegetation growth. Coordinates the placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone according to the SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide to warn motorists. Removes litter, debris, and dead animals from roadway and rights-of-way, and assists supervisor with on-call for after-hours emergencies, as needed. This position requires employee to lift heavy objects. Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations; may include being available for extended working hours or 12-hour shifts. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Six (6) months of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
