Job summary

The State of South Carolina DOT is seeking a field technician to perform vegetation management and road/bridge maintenance in the state highway system. Responsibilities include operating tractors and other equipment, installing drainage, and managing work zones with proper traffic controls.

Qualified candidates have 6 months of related experience, a valid driver’s license, and must obtain a CDL Class A within six months. Emergency shifts and extended hours may be required.

Responsibilities

Job description

Performs a variety of vegetation management activities using equipment such as a combination tractor with side-mounted mower. Performs skilled manual labor and operates medium-duty equipment such as tandem dump truck and skid steer in a variety of activities associated with the repair and preservation of roads and bridges in the state highway system. Performs manual labor to assist with installing and repairing catch basins and other drainage structures and placing drainage pipes. Uses power tools. Coordinates the placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a work zone according to the SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control and Field Guide to warn motorists. Pick up litter, debris, and dead animals. Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations; includes being available for extended working hours or 12-hour shifts, during the day or night. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Six (6) months of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
