Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking a hands-on laborer to support drainage projects across the state highway system. You will assist with installing and repairing basins and pipes, and operate medium-duty equipment such as tandem dump trucks and skid steers where required.

Responsibilities include setting up work zones, performing vegetation tasks, and aiding in emergency operations. A CDL is required within six months of placement and prior experience is beneficial.

Qualifications

• Six (6) months of related work experience or an approved acceptable equivalence.
• Requires a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
• Within six (6) months of placement, attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required.

• Perform manual labor to assist with installing and repairing catch basins, drainage structures, and drainage pipes.
• Operate medium-duty equipment (e.g., tandem dump truck, skid steer, large roller ≤ 4 tons) as needed.
• Coordinate placement of traffic control devices to set up work zones according to the SCDOT guidelines.
• Assist in vegetation management and litter/debris removal; support emergency and inclement weather operations.

Job description

Performs manual labor to assist with installing and repairing catch basins and other drainage structures and placing drainage pipes. Performs skilled manual labor and operates medium-duty equipment such as tandem dump truck, skid steer, and large roller (less than or equal to 4 tons) in a variety of activities associated with the construction, repair, and preservation of roads and bridges in the state highway system. Performs a variety of vegetation management activities using equipment such as a combination tractor with side mounted mower and powered tools. Coordinates the placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a work zone according to the SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control and Field Guide to warn motorists. Picks up litter, debris, and dead animals. Performs other job-related duties as assigned by supervisor. Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations; may include being available for extended working hours or 12-hour shifts.

Six (6) months of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
