Job summary

The State of South Carolina is seeking a maintenance worker to support transportation infrastructure across Beaufort County. The role involves operating equipment such as dump trucks, chipper, concrete mixer, and snow plow to perform roadway maintenance and repairs.

You will assist with traffic control and flagging, perform asphalt and concrete repairs, and help install drainage and signage. The job may require extended hours, exposure to outdoor conditions, and readiness for emergency responses.

Qualifications

• Must hold valid driver’s license; CDL required within six months.
• Ability to perform physical tasks, lift up to 50 lbs, and work in varying weather conditions.

Responsibilities

• Operate equipment such as a dump truck, brush chipper, concrete mixer, roller, snow plow, spreader, powered tools, and hand tools to perform maintenance.
• Assist with setting up traffic control devices and act as a flagger to direct traffic safely.
• Perform asphalt and concrete repair work using proper techniques and equipment.
• Assist with drainage installation and repair, including catch basins and pipes.
• Install and repair traffic signs, pavement markings, and safety devices.
• Respond to emergencies and inclement weather, potentially extended hours or 12-hour shifts.
• Other related duties as assigned.

Job description

Job Responsibilities

Operates small equipment such as a dump truck, brush chipper, concrete mixer, roller, snow plow, spreader, powered tools, and hand tools to perform a variety of maintenance activities. Assists with the placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone. Serves as a flagger to safely direct and control traffic in maintenance work zones. Performs construction, repair, and preservation to asphalt and concrete pavements using proper repair techniques. This work involves the use of hand or pneumatic-powered tools and compaction equipment. Performs manual labor to assist with the installation and repair of catch basins and other drainage structures and the placement of drainage pipes. Assists with the installation and repair of traffic signs, pavement markings, and safety device. Picks up litter, debris, and dead animals. Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations, may include being available for extended working hours or 12-hour shifts. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

There are no minimum training or experience requirements for this classification. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Physical Requirement

The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
