Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking a skilled Equipment Operator/Truck Driver for roadway maintenance across counties. You will operate CDL trucks and support vehicles during shoulder work, pothole patching, paving, drainage, and bridge-related tasks.

Requires a valid CDL Class A license (within 6 months if not held), ability to lift up to 50 lbs, and endurance for outdoor, variable weather conditions. Emergency shifts may be required.

• Physically able to lift up to 50 lbs and perform demanding outdoor work.

Job Responsibilities

Operates 5 yard CDL standard dump truck, and flatbed truck for hauling during shoulder, ditching, hi/lo repairs, pothole patching, paving, A1 treatment, and ditching operation materials such as: limestone, rock, fill dirt, cement, pipe, asphalt construction materials and debris. Assists in the operation of heavier equipment such as tandem dump trucks, front-end loaders, self-propelled belt loaders, zipper, bobcat, steel wheel and pneumatic rollers, motor graders, snow plow with attachment and sand spreader(to move snow and ice from highways & bridges specialized mowers and backhoes. Performs duties using manual labor, in such maintenance tasks as clearing of right-of-ways, cleaning drainage ditches, repairing shoulders, patching potholes, full depth, milling, making base repairs, repair to bridges, paving driveways, removal of dead animal, litter control, and laying sideline/cross line pipe. Assist with emergency operation during and after normal working hours. Repairs potholes and base surface failures of roadway using hand tools such as shovel, pick, rake and asphalt lute to level asphalt as needed. Operates and maintains small equipment, hand/electric and gas power tools in various maintenance operations such as: chain saw in cutting trees on right-of-way, weed eater, shovel, rake, tamp, lute board, wrenches, etc. Performs manual labor in building catch basins, pouring concrete for curbs and raised median, laying pipes for driveways and other drainage structures, repairing shoulders, clearing right-of-ways and repairing bridges. Performs, conducts and documents pre-operation preventive maintenance on vehicle/equipment inspection as outlined in equipment specifications. Flags traffic during road repairs to control flow of traffic to protect workers, general public and equipment. Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations, may include being available for extended working hours or 12-hour shifts. Assist in the operation of a street sweeper (motorized) to sweep and clean roads. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

There are no minimum training or experience requirements for this classification. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position. Physical Requirement: The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
