Job summary

State of South Carolina, Department of Transportation, seeks a Bridge Crew Member for the Holly Hill Bridge Maintenance Unit. The role performs manual labor to construct, repair and preserve bridges using proper repair and replacement techniques around water and in maintenance work zones.

You will operate small equipment and power tools, assist with traffic control devices and flagging, support emergency and weather-related operations, and may work extended shifts.

Qualifications

• A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
• Requires attainment of a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six months of placement.
• There are no minimum training or experience requirements for this classification.

Job description

Performs duties of Bridge Crew Member with Holly Hill Bridge Maintenance Unit. Performs manual labor in a variety of activities associated with the construction, repair and preservation to bridges using proper repair/replacement techniques. These activities occur in and around bodies of water (in emergency situations, swimming may be necessary). Operates small equipment, powered tools, and hand tools to perform a variety of maintenance activities to include circular saws, drills, band saws, chainsaws, grinders, jack hammers, etc. in a safe and productive manner. Assists in the operation of CDL vehicles in accordance with State Fleet policies. Inspects and operates motorized vehicles and equipment and informs supervisor of necessary repairs. Assists with the placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone. Serves as a flagger to safely direct and control traffic in maintenance work zones. Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations, may include being available for extended working hours or 12-hour shifts. Performs other related duties as assigned.

The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
