Job summary

The Wagener Bridge Maintenance Unit of the South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking hands-on workers to perform bridge maintenance and repair tasks. You will operate circular saws, drills, grinders, chainsaws and other tools in and around water environments and heavy traffic zones.

Applicants must have a valid driver’s license and must obtain a Class B CDL within six months of placement. Lifting up to 50 lbs and long periods of standing are expected in this on-site role.

Job Responsibilities

(Wagener Bridge Maintenance Unit) Performs manual labor in a variety of activities associated with the construction, repair and preservation to bridges using proper repair/replacement techniques. These activities occur in and around bodies of water (in emergency situations, swimming may be necessary). Operates small equipment, powered tools, and hand tools to perform a variety of maintenance activities to include circular saws, drills, band saws, chainsaws, grinders, jack hammers, etc. in a safe and productive manner. Assists in the operation of CDL vehicles in accordance with State Fleet policies. Inspects and operates motorized vehicles and equipment and informs supervisor of necessary repairs. Assists with the placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone. Serves as a flagger to safely direct and control traffic in maintenance work zones. Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations, may include being available for extended working hours or 12-hour shifts. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

There are no minimum training or experience requirements for this classification. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required. Requires attainment of a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
