Job summary

Commonwealth of VA Careers seeks an equipment operator for roadway maintenance. You will perform maintenance, operate light, medium and heavy equipment, and participate in emergency operations including snow removal and incident cleanups.

Role requires following MUTCD for work zones, maintaining safety practices, and collaborating with crew members to achieve project goals. CDL readiness and safety footwear are required within stated timelines.

Qualifications

• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
• Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment.
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor and operate tools safely.
• Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions.
• Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.
• Wear safety shoes and follow OSHA/VOSH regulations.
• Skill in operating and maintaining hand and power tools.
• Knowledge of MUTCD and work zone safety practices.
• Ability to work as part of a crew to complete tasks.

Responsibilities

• Operate and maintain light, medium and heavy highway equipment to support maintenance tasks.
• Perform emergency roadway operations including snow/ice removal and crash cleanups.
• Prepare equipment for operations and conduct preventive maintenance.
• Set up and monitor work zones, detours and lane closures using MUTCD guidelines.
• Participate as a working crew member to complete projects on time.
