Job summary

Virginia Department of Transportation is hiring for a hands-on roadway maintenance role. You will operate and maintain various highway equipment, perform preventive maintenance, and work in emergency operations including snow removal and accident clean-up.

Qualifications

• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
• Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies when operating CDL equipment.
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
• Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions.
• Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.
• Safety shoes required.
• Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools.
• Skill in the operation and maintenance of light, medium, and heavy duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.

Responsibilities

• Operate and maintain light, medium and heavy-duty highway equipment to perform maintenance tasks.
• Prepare equipment for snow and ice removal and provide traffic control.
• Perform pre-trip inspections and preventive maintenance on vehicles.
• Implement work zone safety and traffic controls according to MUTCD.
• Work as part of a crew to complete maintenance and construction projects.
• Maintain inventory records and complete simple paperwork.
