Job summary

345 DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION seeks a Heavy Equipment Operator to maintain highways and operate road-building machines as needed. This role reports to the Road Maintenance Supervisor and requires using heavy machinery, performing routine repairs, and ensuring safety during projects.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of safe operation of heavy machinery and manual labor tasks.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work under supervision.
  • Willingness to perform traffic control and debris removal when required.
  • Capable of operating power equipment in highway maintenance.
  • Must be able to pass background checks and drug screening.

Responsibilities

  • Operates equipment such as trucks, graders, bulldozers, loaders and related gear.
  • Performs minor repairs and routine maintenance on equipment and facilities.
  • Repairs traffic devices, shoulders, signs, posts and guardrails.
  • Provides traffic control using stop/slow signs or flags to direct traffic.
  • Removes debris and applies herbicides as needed on rights‑of‑way.
