Job summary

345 DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator I or II to operate power equipment and perform highway maintenance in designated counties. Level I is entry-level under supervision; Level II is full-performance with heavier equipment responsibilities.

A valid Oklahoma driver’s license, CDL may be required, and physical ability tests apply. Benefits include health and dental plans, retirement saving options, PTO, holidays, and an employee assistance program.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of safe operation and maintenance of power equipment or heavy machinery.
  • Ability to perform manual labor and follow instructions.
  • Comfort with operating and maintaining highway maintenance equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Operates equipment or heavy machinery such as trucks, tractors, road graders, dozers, front-end loaders, cranes, backhoes, paint machines, semi-trailers, snow removal equipment and other equipment as needed.
  • Performs minor repairs and maintenance on equipment and facilities.
  • Repairs failures in the roadway shoulders or bridge decks.
  • Repairs and/or replaces signs, posts, guardrails and fences.
  • Provides traffic control assistance using a stop/slow sign or flag to direct highway traffic.
  • Applies herbicide to highway right-of-ways to control weeds and other unwanted vegetation.
  • Remove debris including tires, animal carcass, spilled items and other obstacles.
