Job summary

Virginia Department of Transportation seeks a Transportation Operator II to perform equipment operations, preventive maintenance and manual labor in roadway maintenance, including emergency response and snow removal.

The role requires following safety rules, wearing PPE, and applying MUTCD guidelines; ability to operate light to heavy highway equipment; and obtaining a CDL with a DOT medical card within 11 months.

Qualifications

  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
  • Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Emergency Operations: Operate and maintain light, medium and heavy-duty highway equipment for maintenance and construction tasks.
  • Emergency Operations: Prepare equipment for snow/ice removal and other emergencies; clear roadways and provide traffic control.
  • Equipment Operations: Perform maintenance and operate equipment used in highway maintenance and repair.
  • Job Safety: Apply safety rules, wear PPE, and follow OSHA/VOSHA guidelines and MUTCD for detours and work zones.
  • Manual Labor: Work as part of the crew to complete projects and perform maintenance tasks.
