Job summary

Qualifications

• Previous heavy equipment operation experience is required.
• 5 years' snow plowing experience with a large commercial vehicle.

Responsibilities

Highway Maintenance Class III - 5 Month Position

The Town of Essex is seeking to fill 1 or 2 vacancies for a Highway Maintenance Class III Operator in the Highway Division of Public Works. This is a Temporary 5 month position, 40 hours per week from November 1, 2026 thru April 1, 2027. This role is hourly without benefits. The position works under the direct supervision of the Highway Superintendent with day–to-day oversight from the Highway Foreman. This role performs general maintenance and repair work on Town roadways and public works facilities (including water, sewer and storm water mains), and utilizes heavy equipment such as a road grader, a backhoe, and a street sweeper. In the winter the primary function of this role is plowing Town roads. In general, the regular work hours per week for this role are 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. However, hours will vary depending upon needs of the municipality and the weather. Overtime will be required during the winter season.

The qualified candidate should have a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (or higher), previous heavy equipment operation experience, and 5 years' experience snow plowing using a large commercial vehicle with plow wings.

The pay range for this role is $36.00 to $42.00 per hour, with the actual starting salary being dependent on the candidate skills and prior experience. The Town offers other financial benefits such as double time pay for hours worked on Sundays and Town holidays (with 14 observed Town Holidays per calendar year) and 4 hour minimum call out pay.
