Job summary

Pennington County is seeking an Apprentice Highway Worker to help keep county roadways safe by performing maintenance on highways and bridges and operating heavy equipment.

The role involves snow removal, equipment prep, and compliance with county policies; requires one year of road construction/maintenance experience, a high school diploma or GED, and an SD CDL with tanker endorsement or ability to obtain within 90 days.

Qualifications

• One or more years of road construction/maintenance experience.
• High school diploma or GED.
• Knowledge of equipment and truck operation.
• SD CDL Class A with tanker endorsement or ability to obtain within ninety days of hire.

Responsibilities

• Perform road construction and maintenance on highways and surrounding terrain using heavy equipment safely.
• Remove snow and ice from roads and bridges.
• Prepare equipment for snow removal (chains, cutting edges, and loading trucks with sanding materials).
• Know the functions and limitations of each piece of equipment.
• Maintain bridges and access areas including inspection, maintenance and replacement of structural members.
• Maintain all construction and maintenance equipment in a safe and orderly condition.
• Perform related duties as assigned by supervisor.
• Maintain compliance with all County policies and procedures.
