Join the Highway Maintenance Apprenticeship Program in Cañon City, CO, where you will receive paid mentorship and training to become a Highway Maintenance Specialist. New employees to the State will be paid biweekly. There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year.
Salary: LTC Trainee IV - $41,519.71 annually
LTC Trainee V - $43,704.96 annually
One position will be filled at either the LTC Trainee IV or V level, depending on experience and CDL license status. However, no experience is required.

CDOT's Highway Maintenance Apprenticeship Program offers two years of paid mentorship, classroom and hands-on training to prepare you for a career in public safety. Full benefits are provided. The goal of this trainee position is to help you get your CDL and the experience needed for a Highway Maintenance Specialist position.
Apprentices will earn their Commercial Driver’s License and qualify for a Highway Maintenance Specialist position at various locations across Colorado. Candidates may be eligible for a pay increase after completing one year of the apprenticeship and obtaining CDL licensure (if hired at LTC Trainee IV). Upon completion, candidates are encouraged to apply for our Highway Maintenance Specialist positions, with potential pay increases and opportunities for advancement.
This is a term-limited position, lasting up to two years, with no guaranteed employment beyond that. However, apprentices are encouraged to apply for permanent positions afterward. Candidates with prior experience or a CDL may complete the program sooner. Selected apprentices will need to sign a waiver of retention rights.
The Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) is nationally recognized and registered with the U.S. Department of Labor. It provides in-depth training, both on the job and in the classroom, to prepare participants for a Highway Maintenance Specialist role. Apprentices will be mentored by experienced maintenance professionals and upon successful completion, will receive national certification.
Your daily work will vary based on project needs, weather, and road conditions. You will be on-call and respond to emergencies, working closely with your team and mentor. Skills learned include snow plowing, operating heavy equipment, mowing, debris removal, installing and repairing infrastructure, setting traffic signs, and equipment maintenance.

Physical and environmental requirements include exposure to loud noise, fumes, chemicals, working at heights, and in extreme temperatures. You must be willing and able to operate CDOT vehicles, work near traffic, and respond to emergencies outside regular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
