Job summary

GMHC is seeking a Kitchen Assistant to support the Cook and Cook Assistant in a high-volume production kitchen for lunch service. You will assist with food prep, maintain kitchen cleanliness, operate dishwashing equipment, and manage pantry inventory while ensuring compliance with New York State and NYC health regulations.

You will also support volunteer staff and participate in agency events, with a flexible schedule to accommodate holidays and special events.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
• ServSafe certification required (or must be obtained within 60 days of hire).
• Minimum of two years’ experience in food preparation or food service.
• Experience in high-volume or institutional kitchens preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assist with daily food preparation and storage in accordance with health regulations.
• Wash dishes and clean kitchen equipment to sanitation standards.
• Follow standardized recipes and use high-quality ingredients.
• Label all food items with ingredients, allergens, and preparation dates.
• Support volunteers and maintain a welcoming kitchen environment.
