Century Aluminum in Robards, KY seeks a High Voltage Supervisor to run the switchyard daily, ensuring safe, compliant and scheduled maintenance execution through hourly crews and contractors.

Qualifications

• Substantial experience supervising electrical craft in heavy industry.

• Knowledge of transformers, breakers, station DC systems and rectifier plant.
• Experience in a unionized workforce.
• Strong planning and scheduling discipline with focus on schedule compliance.
• Hands-on CMMS experience, preferably SAP PM.

Responsibilities

• Issue and control permits to work; independently check isolation boundaries before high-consequence work.
• Hold 161 kV switching authorization and supervise second authorized person for critical switching.
• Prepare and execute routine switching; maintain live lines and logs; verify system state after switching.
• Audit field lockout/tagging; conduct pre-job briefings; control access and contractor entry.
• Manage electrical PPE inventory, certification currency, and removal from service.
• Build weekly maintenance schedule; monitor schedule adherence and PM compliance.
• Verify completed maintenance against criteria; record deferrals and assess backlog by risk.
• Negotiate outage windows with operations; plan, resource and execute outages.
• Supervise hourly crew; manage leave, timekeeping, and union interface.
• Define competency matrix; deliver craft training; reauthorize switching and isolation competence.
• Manage overtime, call-out costs and labor cost control.
• Supervise contractor site execution; ensure safety compliance and access; approve completed work.
• Own switchyard civil, fence, drainage, oil containment records; SF6; transformer oil control and spill readiness.
• Record jumpers, lifted leads, alarms; verify restoration of permanent settings after protection work.
• Own yard rounds program; verify corrective actions; report switchyard reliability.
• Own standby roster and first-line call-out response.
• Plan and run periodic drills on critical electrical scenarios.

Job Description:

This role runs the switchyard day to day, delivering safe, compliant and scheduled execution of maintenance through the hourly crew and contractors. It holds the field safety discipline required around high energy apparatus and provides the independent field check that high consequence work requires.

Scope covers the switchyard, rectifier and direct current system, running from the utility point of interconnection through the 161 kV yard, main and regulating transformers, rectifier transformers, rectifiers, the station direct current system and the cables to the Celtron line current control unit, stopping at the busbars out of the rectifiers.

Qualifications/Skills/Knowledge & Education Recommendations:

Required Qualifications

• Substantial experience supervising electrical craft in a heavy industrial environment
• Demonstrated competence around high voltage apparatus, switching, isolation and earthing, or the clear capability to obtain 161 kV switching authorization within a defined period
• Working knowledge of transformers, breakers, station direct current systems and rectifier plant
• Experience in a unionized workforce
• Planning and scheduling discipline, with evidence of holding schedule compliance rather than reporting it
• Hands on computerized maintenance management system experience, preferably SAP PM
• A personal safety standard that holds under production pressure

Preferred Qualifications

• Formal qualification in an electrical discipline
• Substation, switchyard or transmission maintenance experience
• Contractor management on capital and outage work
• Experience in metals, mining, cement or comparable continuous process industry
• Familiarity with NFPA 70E and NESC requirements in an owner operator setting

Roles and Responsibilities:

Hold 161 kV switching authorization and provide the second authorized person for independent checking of critical switching

Prepare and execute routine switching, maintain the live operating lines, switching logs, and verify the post switching system state

Audit field execution of lockout and tagging, conduct pre job briefings, and control switchyard access, escorting, key control and contractor entry

Own the electrical protective equipment inventory, certification currency and removal from service

7

Build the weekly maintenance schedule, measure schedule and preventive maintenance compliance, and prepare craft ready work packages

8

Verify completed maintenance against acceptance criteria before release for service, and record and evaluate deferrals and backlog by risk

9

Negotiate outage windows with operations, plan, resource and execute the outage schedule

10

Supervise the hourly crew including leave, timekeeping, time entry, performance management and the union interface

Define the competency matrix, deliver and record craft training, and periodically assess and reauthorize switching and isolation competence

Manage overtime, call out cost and labor cost control

Supervise contractor site execution, safety compliance and access, accept completed work, and own term and annual contractor agreements

Own switchyard civil, fence, drainage and oil containment condition, Sulphur hexafluoride records, transformer oil control and spill response readiness

Record temporary jumpers, lifted leads, disabled alarms and test blocks, and independently confirm restoration of permanent settings after protection work

Own the yard rounds Programme, corrective action closure and verification of effectiveness, and switchyard reliability reporting
