Job description

The Presidio Trust is seeking a High Voltage Electrician who will support the Utilities Department. The Presidio Trust is an innovative federal agency that stewards and shares the history, beauty, and wonder of the Presidio for everyone to enjoy forever. It is among the most biologically diverse parks in America and a popular destination with beaches, museums, restaurants, hotels, homes, and offices.

Reporting to the High Voltage Electrical Supervisor, the High Voltage Electrician performs duties of a journey‑level high voltage electrician, engaged in construction, maintenance and repair of high voltage systems and related systems for commercial buildings and residences. Operates and maintains work in a clean, safe, compliant and environmentally conscientious manner.

This is a full‑time position with benefits and a starting at $58.33 per hour, based in the San Francisco Bay Area. This position is included in a bargaining unit, specifically the Laborer’s International Union of North America, Local 792, United Public Employees of California. Responsibilities
  • Plan wiring and installation of equipment and fixtures such as pad‑mounted transformers, generators, vacuum or air switches, substation circuit breakers, load break elbows and junctions, KWH meters, streetlight foundations, insulators, and other related equipment and/or hardware.
  • Inspect overhead and underground circuits to identify faulty or worn parts, maintaining, repairing and overhauling if necessary.
  • Work on energized or de‑energized circuits to maintain or repair high voltage electrical equipment and systems. Operate portable tools: gas grill, battery powered drill, reciprocating saw, jack hammer and chain saw etc.
  • Install primary and secondary underground cables in conduit utilizing the proper tools, equipment and work methods.
  • Work in bucket truck, climb poles as needed. Utilize testing equipment: Dielectric tester (Hypot), meggar, impulse generator, phase sequence meter, phase rotation meter, high voltage phase meter, multi‑meter, transformer tester.
  • Ability to terminate and splice high and low voltage cables utilizing hand taping and pre‑molded splice kit (cold or heat shrinkable).
  • Ability to determine the proper materials needed for assigned task and install to industry standards. Ability to safely operate substation circuit breakers and relays from 4160 to 12000 volts.
  • Ability to install single and three phase kilowatt hour meters and interpret readings. Utilize proper safety apparatus: Hot sticks, rubber blanket, line hoses, rubber gloves, hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protections and safety shoes.
  • Inspect wiring and fixtures for conformance to company specifications or local electrical codes. Interprets Trust policies to workers and enforces safety regulations.
  • Interpret specifications, blueprints, and job orders and perform task as required. Recommends measures to improve production methods, equipment performance, and quality of product.
  • Recommend changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency of shop, department, or work crew.
  • Analyze and resolve work problems or assists workers in solving work problems. Initiate or suggests plans to motivate workers to achieve work goals.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • High School diploma and/or Completion of a certified Electrical apprenticeship program, OR
  • Five (5) years of verifiable journey level high voltage electrician experience of which three (3) years must be in the installation, maintenance and operation of high/medium voltages distribution systems.
  • Valid California Class B driver’s license.
  • Confined Space entry certification.
  • First Aid/CPR.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence and to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations.
  • Where only limited standardization exists: Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
