Job summary

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is seeking a Scientific Instrumentation & Data Acquisition Engineer to support data path from detectors through back-end software. You will work on firmware, software, and hardware components, ensuring reliability of high-throughput data systems for LCLS instruments in a multidisciplinary team.

The role requires deep understanding of detectors, FPGA systems, PCIe and fiber-optic links, and collaboration with firmware, software, and hardware teams.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in physics, electronics, CS or related field with 4 years experience, or a Master’s degree in related fields.
• Proficiency in VHDL firmware coding and simulation.
• Strong Python and C++ programming skills.
• Experience designing and debugging electronics from concept to production.
• Experience with high-speed serial/optical links and FPGA-based systems.
• Ability to work with minimal supervision and strong communication.

Responsibilities

• Support deployed systems, including firmware, software, and hardware; debug issues in the LCLS Data System pipeline.
• Develop diagnostics and tools to improve system stability and performance.
• Lead and mentor software engineers and collaborate across teams.
