Job summary

Tacoma Public Schools is seeking an experienced high school athletic coach to lead and develop a competitive program for the upcoming season. The role focuses on skill development, safety, and positive student outcomes within district and WIAA policies.

Responsibilities include planning practices, maintaining records, coordinating with the athletic director, and promoting sportsmanship while ensuring compliance with rules and eligibility requirements.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Minimum three years of experience as an assistant coach.
• Must be at least 21 years old per WIAA.
• First Aid, CPR and AED training required.
• Red Cross Safety Training or Lifeguard certification required for swimming, diving and water polo.
• Knowledge of WIAA policies and district regulations.
• Ability to motivate and engage students and maintain fairness.

Responsibilities

• Supervises assistant coaches and student athletes to promote effective student learning through participation in athletic activities.
• Plans, develops and implements an effective program for the particular sport and prepares athletes physically and mentally; reviews district policies and eligibility rules.
• Organizes regular, instructional practice sessions to develop athletes’ potential and maintains records of activities.
• Coordinates facility use, budgeting, equipment purchases, injury handling and transportation in collaboration with athletic directors.
• Informs students and parents about eligibility rules and sport-specific requirements.
• Maintains equipment issuance, inventory, safety checks and records; ensures proper maintenance and storage.
• Issues letters and awards and assists in addressing program, facilities and transportation issues with athletic directors.
