Job summary

Henrico County Public Schools is seeking a dedicated teacher at Varina High School to deliver high‑quality instruction aligned with state standards. You will plan lessons, assess progress, provide feedback, and collaborate with families and colleagues to support student growth.

This 10-month, 209-day position starts August 17, 2026, with prorated salary. The program includes professional development and opportunities such as the $3,500 Opportunity School stipend.

Qualifications

  • Must hold or be eligible for a Virginia teaching license with endorsement in the relevant content area.
  • Knowledge of instructional best practices, curriculum design, and adolescent development.
  • Strong skills in communication, collaboration, classroom management, and problem-solving.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse learners and school community members.

Responsibilities

  • Instruction & Planning: Develop and deliver daily lesson plans aligned with state and district standards; use diverse instructional strategies; implement differentiated instruction; integrate technology to enhance engagement.
  • Classroom Management: Establish and maintain clear expectations; create a positive, respectful, inclusive classroom; manage routines for safety and instructional time.
  • Assessment & Data Use: Design formative and summative assessments; analyze data to monitor progress and adjust instruction; provide timely feedback to students and parents.
  • Communication & Collaboration: Communicate regularly with students, families, and colleagues; participate in meetings and planning; collaborate with special education staff and counselors as needed.
  • Professional Responsibilities: Attend work daily; engage in professional development; maintain records; uphold policies and standards; perform other duties as assigned.

General Statement of Duties

Responsible for delivering high-quality instruction that supports students' academic growth, critical thinking, and social-emotional development. The teacher creates an engaging, inclusive, and safe learning environment while aligning instruction with state standards, curriculum frameworks, and school goals. This role includes planning and implementing lessons, assessing student progress, providing feedback, and collaborating with colleagues, families, and the community.

Essential Duties
Instruction & Planning
  • Develop and deliver daily lesson plans aligned with state and district standards.
  • Use a variety of instructional strategies to meet diverse learning needs.
  • Implement differentiated instruction, accommodations, and modifications to support all learners.
  • Integrate technology and innovative practices into teaching to enhance student engagement.
Classroom Management
  • Establish and maintain clear expectations for behavior and learning.
  • Create a positive, respectful, and inclusive classroom environment.
  • Manage classroom routines to ensure safety, orderliness, and instructional time
Assessment & Data Use
  • Design formative and summative assessments to measure student learning.
  • Analyze data to monitor progress, adjust instruction, and support student achievement.
  • Provide timely, constructive feedback to students and parents.
Communication & Collaboration
  • Communicate regularly and professionally with students, families, and colleagues.
  • Participate in department meetings, team planning, and school initiatives.
  • Collaborate with special education staff, counselors, and support personnel as needed.
Professional Responsibilities
  • Attend work daily and fulfill all assigned responsibilities.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development to refine instructional practice.
  • Maintain accurate records, including grades, attendance, and required documentation.
  • Uphold all school and district policies, including professional and ethical standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional Information
  • This is a 10-month (209-day) position with a contractual start date of August 17, 2026.
  • Salary will be prorated based on the official start date.

Starting in the 2023-24 school year, Henrico County Public Schools will designate select schools with high rates of vacant positions and provisionally licensed staff as Opportunity Schools. This program provides additional staffing resources and specialized professional learning as well as compensation supplements to eligible staff.
