General Statement of Duties

This position provides high school students who are interested in emergency patient care with exposure to the role of an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). It requires comprehensive knowledge of instructional and training techniques used to effectively convey the material necessary for EMT certification, including course development and presentation. The role also demands a strong understanding of the principles and practices of emergency care, basic pharmacology, and medical terminology. In addition, the instructor must be able to perform required medical skills in accordance with state standards, teach emergency medical service procedures, establish and maintain effective working relationships, and collaborate with agencies involved in patient care and transportation.

Essential Duties
Career & Technical Education Duties and Expectations
  • Plans, delivers, and assesses instruction using a competency-based education model.
  • Participates in ongoing professional development to maintain current knowledge of curriculum, instructional practices, and industry trends.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of current industry safety standards and ensures their incorporation into instruction.
  • Supports and promotes student participation in internships and apprenticeships with local employers.
Instructional Responsibilities
  • Use a variety of instructional strategies to meet diverse learning needs.
  • Implement differentiated instruction, accommodations, and modifications to support all learners.
  • Integrate technology and innovative practices into teaching to enhance student engagement.
  • Establish and maintain clear expectations for behavior and learning.
  • Create a positive, respectful, and inclusive classroom environment.
  • Provide timely, constructive feedback to students and parents.
  • Communicate regularly and professionally with students, families, and colleagues.
  • Participate in department meetings, team planning, and school initiatives.
  • Collaborate with special education staff, counselors, and support personnel as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional Information
  • The minimum salary for this position is $68,227.
  • This is a 239-day or 11-month assignment with a start date of July 30, 2026.
  • Annual salaries are prorated based upon the official work start date.

Minimum Requirements
  • Must hold or be eligible for a teaching license in the state of Virginia endorsed in teaching Emergency of Medical Technician skills; must have a minimum of one year experience as an EMT.
  • EMT certified applicants with two years of experience within the past five years are encouraged to apply.
  • Individual must hold a valid EMS Education Coordinator certification (minimum requirement).
