Job summary

Uncommon Schools seeks a high school English Language Arts teacher in Newark, NJ, to engage students with a literature-focused curriculum and rigorous discourse. You will guide discussion, foster critical analysis, and prepare students for college coursework in a supportive urban setting.

You will collaborate with mentors, leaders, and families to ensure equitable access to resources, ongoing professional development, and a culture of excellence and belonging.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting students’ social emotional and academic development.
  • Enthusiasm for collaborating with internal and external partners in the best interest of students.
  • A self-directed learner who solicits and implements feedback to improve outcomes and achieve objectives.
  • Academic expertise in Humanities, English, Social Sciences, or related fields.
  • Bachelor's degree required; NJ certification eligibility per state guidelines; all staff must become NJ certified.

Responsibilities

  • Teach from a robust literature curriculum that prioritizes inclusive texts and AP/SAT readiness.
  • Guide students to analyze works by Baldwin, Morrison, Fitzgerald, Shakespeare, Gyasi.
  • Develop students’ independent and collaborative reading, writing, and discussion skills.
  • Facilitate student-led discourse with evidence-based claims and rhetoric analysis.
  • Assess student understanding and adapt lessons to maximize learning.
  • Collaborate with department and grade-level teams on content and instructional strategies.
  • Meet weekly with principal/coach to review trends and differentiate instruction.
  • Build positive relationships with students and families; engage in school-wide activities.
