Job summary

Paul D. Camp Community College is seeking a High School Career Coach (Restricted) to guide students in defining career goals and exploring postsecondary options, including community college and apprenticeships.

This grant-funded, part-time role (up to 29 hours/week) serves Lakeland, Kings Fork, and Nansemond River High Schools during the school year, with evenings and regional travel required to partner sites.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Student Personnel Services, Education, Psychology, Human Services or related field.
• Knowledge of counseling and/or career development theory with adolescents.
• Experience developing and implementing experiential group instruction.
• Strong written and oral communication skills with students, administrative staff, faculty and parents.
• Organization and data collection skills to track students receiving services.
• Skilled in using computer software and Internet for communication, data collection and research.
• Knowledge of basic computer applications (Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Ability to create, plan, organize and implement initiatives.
• Strong customer service and relationship-building skills.
• Ability to advise students of diverse backgrounds and needs in a high school or higher education setting.
• Ability to interpret and explain complex enrollment rules and assist with admissions, registration or financial aid.
• Ability to work independently.
• Ability to work flexible schedule that might include evenings and daily travel to and from campuses, high schools, and employer partners in our service region.
• Travel regionally and work some evenings and weekends as needed.

Job Description

Paul D. Camp Community College is a small 2-year college in Southeast Virginia. Campuses are located in Franklin and Suffolk. There also is a center in Smithfield. The college offers associate degrees, certificates, and career studies certificates In transfer and career/technical programs; credit and non-credit workforce services and training for businesses and industries; special interest classes for the community; and summer classes for youth through the Regional Workforce Development Center. A dual enrollment program for high school students, online courses, and developmental studies classes are available at the college as well.

This is a professional position working closely with high school personnel, community college stakeholders, and business/industry to help secondary students easily transition to postsecondary education and successful career pathways. The High School Career Coach helps high school students define their career aspirations and to explore community college, including Camp Community College, and other postsecondary programs, including apprenticeships and workforce training, that can help students achieve their educational, career, and financial goals. Camp's HS Career Coach represents and promote the college and assists students with the aforementioned decisions, as well as with Camp applications for admission and financial aid, connections to college services and resources, and, in collaboration with Admissions and Recruitment Specialists and other college staff; ensures prospective students successfully navigate the steps to admission and enrollment - from point of "connection" to "entry" into a credit or non-credit program of study at the college. Will include evening hours for student activities and events, and/or conferences. This grant-funded(restricted) position is part-tin1e (up to 29-hours per week) and provides coaching services at Lakeland High School, Kings Fork High School, and Nansemond River High School during the school year (September - June).

Minimum Qualifications

• Applicants should possess a Bachelor's Degree in Student Personnel Services, Education, Psychology, Human Services or a related field, and/or equivalent combination of education and training that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities.
• The high school career coach must have knowledge and experience in the following areas:
• Knowledge of counseling and/or career development theory with emphasis on adolescents and career development;
• Skill in developing and implementing experiential group instruction;
• Strong written and oral communication skills; effective in communicating with students, administrative staff, faculty, and parents;
• Organization and data collection skills to track students who receive services; able to interpret and report data as required;
• Skilled in using computer software, Internet for communication, data collection and research;
• Knowledge of basic computer applications (Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Ability to create, plan, organize and implement initiatives;
• Strong customer service and relationship-building skills;
• Ability to advise students of diverse backgrounds and needs in a high school or higher education setting;
• Ability to interpret and explain complex rules and regulations and/or respond to routine inquiries regarding enrollment services functions such as admissions, registration or financial Aid;
• Ability to work independently;
• Ability to work flexible schedule that might include evenings, and daily travel to and from campuses, high schools, and employer partners in our service region for outreach and follow-up services.
• This position also requires the ability to travel regionally and work flexible hours to include some evenings and weekends as needed.

Additional Considerations

• Knowledge of student information systems with ability to record and access information.
• Knowledge and understanding of the community college mission, particularly as it relates to enrollment and support services.
• Considerable knowledge of regulations and laws related to college enrollment services program, record retention, and release of confidential data.
