Job summary

Johnson & Johnson Medical Devices IDHF is seeking a Human Factors Engineer Co-op in Raritan, NJ for May–August 2027. You will conduct contextual research, create usability specs, and test with stakeholders to improve medical device interfaces (hardware and software).

The role emphasizes user-centered design, collaboration with product teams, and adherence to regulatory guidelines (FDA/IEC 62366). On-site internship with possible stipend; CPT/OPT status considerations apply.

Qualifications

• Pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s in Human Factors, Usability Engineering, Cognitive Science, Psychology, Mechanical Engineering, or Biomedical Engineering.
• Only students in their 2nd year of bachelor’s or above will be considered; US work authorization required.
• Availability for at least a 4-month co-op rotation.
• Minimum GPA of 3.0 with leadership/participation in campus programs.
• Understanding of the research process; usability testing preferred.
• Knowledge of human factors principles; basics of perception and cognition.
• Experience turning user feedback into design insights.
• Familiarity with FDA/ISO/AAMI usability standards preferred.

Responsibilities

• Leverage human factors standards to inform new product designs for safe, effective use.
• Support planning, conduct, and reporting of user research activities.
• Consolidate user feedback into meaningful design insights and recommendations.
• Perform root cause analysis for use-related problems during usability tests.
• Understand use environments and contribute to user workflows.
• Comply with medical device human factors guidance like IEC 62366 and FDA guidance.
• Contribute to HF documentation and reports and author study documents.
