The internship provides supervised training inside a busy shop, with real-world exposure to diesel engines, hydraulic and electrical systems, and preventive maintenance. Participants receive structured training, mentorship, and a clear path to potential full-time employment after separation from military service,

Qualifications

• Active-duty service member approved for DoD SkillBridge with 180 days or fewer before separation.
• Military experience in mechanical/technical maintenance preferred.
• Basic understanding of mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems.
• Ability to read technical manuals and follow repair procedures.
• Willingness to learn manufacturer-specific diagnostic tools and software.
• Valid driver's license; CDL preferred but not required.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical tasks in a shop environment.
• Strong work ethic, commitment to safety, and professional communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Communicates and supports the Kirby Smith vision and core values of One Mission, One Team, One Plan, One Goal.
• Performs diagnostic testing, troubleshooting, and repair on diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and powertrains under technician supervision.
• Completes preventive maintenance inspections and scheduled service work on heavy equipment.
• Reads and interprets technical manuals, wiring diagrams, and manufacturer service bulletins.
• Uses diagnostic software and specialized tools to identify equipment issues.
• Documents work performed, parts used, and labor hours in the shop management system.
• Maintains a clean, organized, and safe work area in accordance with company and applicable safety standards.
• Communicates professionally with technicians, service managers, and customers regarding equipment status and repairs.
• Participates in on-the-job training and shadows experienced technicians across equipment specialties.
• Consistent and reliable on-site attendance.
• Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
