Job summary

LCI-Lineberger Construction, located in Lancaster, SC, is seeking an entry-level Heavy Equipment Operator Trainee to join an eight-week NCCER-accredited training program.

Located in Lancaster, SC, LCI-Lineberger Construction Inc. is a heavy highway and civil construction in asphalt manufacturing and paving, reclamation and civil construction projects. We are currently seeking candidates to train and employ in heavy equipment operation.

I. JOB SUMMARY:

The Heavy Equipment Operator Trainee is an entry-level operations position designed for individuals hired to participate in an eight-week Heavy Equipment Operator training class provided by Carolina Construction School and accredited through NCCER. The Trainee will learn heavy equipment safety, basic operational techniques, pre- and post-operation inspections, site awareness, communication, and foundational construction skills while also supporting field operations as assigned. The Trainee is expected to work in a manner that supports the company goal: One Team, One Mission: Safety, Quality, Production.

  • Description of Tasks: The following is an abbreviated list of tasks:
    • Attend and successfully participate in an eight-week NCCER-accredited Heavy Equipment Operator training class provided by Carolina Construction School as scheduled by the company
    • Learn and demonstrate safe work practices, equipment walk-around inspections, basic maintenance awareness, and proper use of PPE, including safety components, fluid levels, basic greasing points, wear items, and general equipment condition equipment general conditions
    • Participate in supervised classroom, simulator, and/or hands-on field instruction to build entry-level operating skills on designated equipment
    • Accurately complete and submit training records, time records, checklists, and other required paperwork
    • Work safely, wears PPE and notify supervisor of any potentially unsafe situations
    • Maintain a neat and orderly work area
    • Remain productive for the entire workday
    • Maintain personal appearance in accordance with company policy
    • Show a willingness to learn jobsite expectations, equipment terminology, company procedures, and company-wide goals
    • Perform any other special projects as needed

Prerequisites for Position:

Formal Education: High school diploma or equivalent preferred

  • Successful completion of the assigned Carolina Construction School NCCER-accredited Heavy Equipment Operator training class is required after hire.

  • Must be able to lift, push, pull or carry objects, use abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue and to effectively jump, sprint or throw an object
  • Requires good manual dexterity (hand, hand with arm, two hands) and multi-limb coordination
  • Experience and Training Progression
    • Heavy Equipment Operator Trainee — Entry-level position for candidates hired to complete the eight-week NCCER-accredited Heavy Equipment Operator training class through Carolina Construction School and gain supervised field exposure
      • Upon successful completion of training and demonstration of required safety, attendance, and performance expectations, the Trainee may be considered for placement or progression in an Operator role based on company needs.
      • Operator 1 — Fulfills all trainee requirements, demonstrates safe work habits, possesses required training credentials, and is able to operate at least one major piece of equipment and several pieces of support equipment under company expectations
      • Operator 2 — Fulfills Operator 1 expectations, has increased proficiency operating multiple pieces of equipment, demonstrates consistent safety and production performance, completes required training or certification requirements, and is able to perform assigned work with limited supervision
      • Operator 3 — Fulfills Operator 1 and Operator 2 expectations, is proficient on several major pieces of equipment and support equipment, and may help guide or lead other team members as assigned

Physical Demands: The following physical demands are representative of those that must be met by a Heavy Equipment Operator Trainee to successfully participate in training and perform assigned field support duties.

  • Constant physical effort, including standing, is required during a regular work shift of 8 to 12 hours per day. Employee must be able to stand for extended periods of time and to stoop, bend, crouch as required to perform Key Duties.
  • Ability to lift and carry, on a frequent basis, at least 50-90 pounds personally, and up to 150 pounds with assistance.
  • Manual dexterity to hand-carry equipment, construction materials, forms, power tools, and hand tools.
  • Maintain constant alertness to the multiple concurrent activities of the construction site, including activities of other employees and contractors, the operation of stationary equipment, and the movement of mobile equipment.
  • Frequently walk on uneven surfaces, including natural ground in varying weather conditions.

Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described below are representative of those that a Heavy Equipment Operator Trainee may encounter during training, supervised field instruction, and assigned jobsite support duties.

  • Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions, including variations in temperatures from freezing to 90 degrees Fahrenheit or above during summer months.
  • Work may involve a variety of substances commonly found on a construction site such as form oil, grease, curing compounds, gasoline, diesel fuel, and asphalt registering approximately 300 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Work environment periodically exposes employees to high levels of noise, grease and dust that is typically associated with a construction project.
  • Employee regularly works on or near heavy equipment and moving machinery.
