Position Description
Operate several types of power construction equipment to excavate, lift, move, and grade earth, fill materials and machines, erect structural and reinforcing steel, and pour concrete or other hard surface paving materials in a safe and timely manner with high quality.
Responsibilities
- There are several classes of Equipment Operator. The equipment and duties/responsibilities of each class are defined below.
- Light Equipment Operator
- Operates power construction equipment such as backhoe, Bobcat, compactor (towed), elevator, farm tractor, forklift (various types), hand truck, scissor lift, power broom, water wagon.
- Duties include loading and unloading materials for construction purposes.
- Medium Equipment Operator
- Operates equipment including bulldozer (less than D-6), self-propelled compactor, rough-terrain forklift, front-end loader (less than 1 yard bucket), and trucks over 2 tons.
- Must be knowledgeable in OSHA excavation methods, swing barricades, back-up alarms; read survey stakes for alignment and grading; verify load weights and read load charts where applicable.
- Heavy Equipment Operator
- Operates batch plant, backhoe (track), bulldozer (D-6 and above), dragline, drum hoist, front-end loader (track and rubber tire, 1 yard bucket and above), gradall, motor grader, scraper.
- Excavate, move, and grade earth; may direct workers on placing blocks and outriggers on cranes; follow OSHA regulations for excavation methods and safety.
- All Equipment Operators
- Move controls to operate machines and attachments; perform routine maintenance; inspect equipment daily for safe operation; maintain radio contact with supervisor; comply with safety and project rules; other duties as assigned.
Job Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Minimum of 3 years of field experience.
- May require a CDL, Class A or B.
- May require annual physical examination.
- May be required to pass certification for operating certain equipment.
- Truck operators may need a valid state motor vehicle operator’s license.
- Ability to read, write, and communicate clearly with supervisor and co-workers; understand directions from supervisor.
- Use basic math to calculate load weights and balance points.
- Physical requirements: lift up to 50 pounds; tolerate climbing, bending, twisting, standing, and reaching; work in hot/cold/damp/cramped environments.
- Candidate may be required to pass a drug test and criminal background check based on job location and requirements.
