Job Description
This skilled position is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of motorized heavy equipment within the Solid Waste department. The role is based at the Resource Recovery Facility on Buckingham Road.
Incumbents perform waste processing activities including handling, recovery, recycling, and proper disposal. The position may require work at other Solid Waste facilities and entails duties assigned as necessary. It is an essential role during declared County emergency events or natural disasters.
Responsibilities
- Heavy Equipment Operation: Operate machinery such as front-loaders, backhoes, excavators, and skid steers.
- Vehicle Operation: Drive Class E vehicles including pickups and other light-duty vehicles.
- Safety Inspections: Conduct and document routine safety checks on vehicles and equipment per standards.
- Functionality Testing: Test vehicles and equipment to identify malfunctions.
- Preventative Maintenance: Perform light maintenance tasks like greasing, cleaning radiators and filters, refilling fluids, and replacing filters and hydraulic lines.
- Traffic Control: Manage traffic and implement procedures at the tipping floor.
- Communication: Use hand signals and radios for effective communication.
- Waste Screening and Classification: Inspect incoming waste for prohibited materials and identify waste types for proper disposal charges.
- Material Handling: Engage in sorting, segregating, relocating, windrow building, loading, compacting, and recycling activities.
- Customer Interaction: Assist and educate the public on disposal practices and facility locations.
- Team Coordination: Collaborate with contractors and other county departments.
- Vehicle & Equipment Sanitation: Clean vehicles and equipment, including interiors and general housekeeping.
- Documentation: Maintain daily logs and paperwork.
- Grounds Maintenance: Keep facility grounds clean through sweeping, shoveling, and litter control.
- Facility Inspections: Ensure operations comply with environmental and permit regulations.
Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED and at least one year of heavy construction equipment operation or related experience; three years preferred.
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to obtain a 16-hour Florida Solid Waste Operator certification within six months of employment.
- Knowledge of environmental regulations related to solid waste processing.
- Ability to operate various heavy equipment safely and interpret gauges for diagnostics.
- Skilled in performing routine preventative maintenance and using related tools.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Physical ability to lift up to 100 pounds, work in various weather conditions, and perform tasks including standing, crawling, sitting, or kneeling.
Work Schedule
Monday through Friday with Saturdays as needed; specific hours may vary based on shift assignments.
