Job summary

King County is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator to safely operate heavy equipment at the Cedar Hills Landfill and other Solid Waste facilities. You will perform safety procedures, identify hazards, and respond to on-site emergencies, while directing truck dumping and assisting customers.

Union-represented position with potential overtime; strong teamwork and communication skills are essential. CDL eligibility or current license with medical card is required or to be obtained within 6 months of

Qualifications

• At least 2 years of experience safely operating heavy equipment.
• Experience operating large dozers (e.g., D-9), backhoes, scrapers, refuse compactors, sweepers, slope mowers, front‑end loaders and graders.
• Ability to identify potential on-site hazards and respond to safety situations.
• Strong teamwork and ability to work independently.
• Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
• Basic PC skills (timesheet entry, email, virtual training/meetings).
• Valid Washington State driver's license; Class A or Class B CDL upon hire, or ability to obtain within six months; current Medical Card.

Responsibilities

• Operate a large dozer D-9 or similar for grading, excavation and back-filling.
• Operate a refuse compactor at the landfill site.
• Operate a push/pull scraper (25 yards) for waste and soil movement.
• Operate sweepers, slope mowers, cranes, front-end loaders and graders.
• Ensure compliance with driving laws, materials use, survey basics, construction safety and environmental regs.
• Respond to on-site accidents, emergencies and hazardous spills; assess immediate concerns.
