Job summary

Dougherty County Public Works is hiring a Heavy Equipment Operator II to operate heavy equipment and trucks for grounds, buildings, and road maintenance. Responsibilities include operating backhoes and bulldozers, loading and packing dirt, and constructing roads with crewmembers.

The role requires a High School Diploma or GED and two years of heavy equipment experience, plus a valid state CDL. Work is performed under supervision with opportunities to perform maintenance on machinery.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Two years of experience operating heavy equipment or equivalent.
• Valid state commercial driver’s license required.

Responsibilities

• Reviews daily assignments to plan effective methods for completion and inspects equipment before use.
• Operates heavy equipment such as backhoes, bulldozers, earthmovers, dump trucks, motor graders, dragline cranes, loaders and tractors.
• Clears and prepares landscapes for road construction, manholes, and pipe laying.
• Constructs roads with crewmembers by cutting slopes, ditches, laying materials and maintaining right‑of‑way.
• Mows rights‑of‑way, canals and ditches.
• Maintains roads, canal right‑of‑way, and ditches; assists with driveway installations.
• Loads and packs dirt and other heavy materials.
• Performs minor preventive maintenance and repairs on equipment as necessary.
