Job summary

The Dougherty County Public Works department is seeking an Equipment Operator to operate heavy equipment and perform preventative maintenance as part of Environmental Control and Public Works.

The role requires a high school diploma or GED, two years of experience with light equipment, and a valid state driver’s license. You will log work, assist in road construction, and help with park maintenance and traffic direction.

• Assists in road construction and directs traffic at worksites.
• Performs preventative maintenance on equipment and related tasks.

The Dougherty County Public Works department is hiring on a continuous for an Equipment Operator. The purpose of this position is to operate heavy equipment used by the departments of Environmental Control and Public Works to perform minor preventative maintenance. This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.

Job Responsibilities

• Maintains and operates one or more of the following types of vehicles or equipment: buses, front-end loaders, tractors, mowers, dump trucks, backhoes, boom trucks, motor graders, track loaders, excavators, lowboys, bulldozers, spray trucks, and sweepers.
• Keeps logs and files reports, as required.
• Operates heavy equipment in a safe and responsible manner.
• Provides Park maintenance, to include mowing, edging, weeding, blowing walking trails off, tree & limb removal, plumbing, carpentry, irrigation repairs, concrete work, playground equipment maintenance, and maintain pond levels.
• Assists building shoulders on the roadways, along with any other type of road construction work necessary.
• Assists in directing traffic on worksites.
• Preventative Maintenance on mowers and small equipment.
• Performs related work as assigned.
• High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
• Two (2) years of experience operating light equipment or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
• Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, jumping, lifting, digging, pushing and raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
