Job description

Salary Information

Compensation plans are based on a multi-step progression system. The pay range reflects the entry level and maximum salary potential in the assigned pay grade.

A starting salary may be negotiated and will be commensurate with education, training and experience in alignment with pay administration policies and Montgomery Personnel Board Rules & Regulations.

Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform skilled work in the operation of a variety of heavy automotive and related equipment. The employee in this class is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of heavy automotive and related equipment used in construction and maintenance activities. The operation of this equipment frequently entails considerable manipulative difficulty, and considerable importance is attached to the ability to effectively perform specialized tasks for which equipment is designed. Normally work is performed on one specified type of equipment, though the employee is required to operate other units or perform semi-skilled laboring tasks during slack or seasonal periods.

The major work responsibilities may include:

  • Drive and operate heavy weight dump trucks and lowboy tractor trailers.
  • Operate dozers, motor graders, trash compactors, elevated earth mover scrapers, excavators, backhoes, and front end loaders.
  • Service and perform basic preventive maintenance checks.
  • Perform manual labor work as required.

Employee reports to the Assistant Solid Waste Superintendent and/or the Solid Waste Superintendent.

Distinguishing Characteristics
  • This class is distinguished from Heavy Equipment Operator I in that the Heavy Equipment Operator II classification requires more skill in operating and maneuvering power‑driven equipment to complete tasks.
  • This class is distinguished from Construction Equipment Operator in that Heavy Equipment Operator II does not supervise subordinate employees in the absence of the Assistant Solid Waste Superintendent, and the Construction Equipment Operator classification requires more skill in operating construction and maintenance equipment.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Two years of experience and/or training that include operation of heavy equipment such as a dozer, motor grader, dump truck, trash compactor, earth mover scraper, excavator, backhoe, lowboy tractor trailer and front-end loader in public works, utilities, construction or a related field.
  • Must possess at least a Class B Commercial Driver’s License.

NOTE: Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered.

Special Requirements
  • Must obtain and maintain ADEM Certified Landfill Operator Certification within four years of employment.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Alabama driver’s license.
  • Must be able to work weekends, holidays and overtime as needed to perform job duties.
  • Physical abilities:
    • Lift 50-75 pounds, assisted as needed, to pick up equipment parts, a fusion welder, air wrench and to change tires.
    • Work outdoors as needed to operate equipment from an open or enclosed cab while being exposed to extreme conditions (hot and cold temperatures, rain, dust and dirt).
    • Sit for extended periods of time (up to eight hours) to operate heavy equipment.
    • Stand, stoop, bend or kneel for periods of time to inspect equipment or perform preventive maintenance on equipment.
Benefits
  • Employees are offered a competitive benefits package, which includes health, dental, and life insurance; paid annual and sick leave; paid holidays; and participation in the Retirement Systems of Alabama (RSA) retirement program.
Drug Test

Employment may be conditional upon the potential employee passing a pre‑employment drug test. The drug test may require the submission of a sample of hair, finger nails, and/or urine that will verify illegal drug use.

Background Check

Employment may be conditional upon the potential employee passing a background check. Candidates will be asked to provide consent prior to the administration of background checks.

Equal Employment Opportunity

Discrimination against any person in recruitment, examination, appointment, training, promotion, retention, discipline, or any other aspect of personnel administration because of political or religious opinions or affiliations or because of race, national origin, or any other non–merit factors is prohibited. Discrimination on the basis of age, sex, or physical disability is prohibited except where specific age, sex, or physical requirements constitute a bona fide occupational qualification necessary to proper and efficient administration.

Request for Accommodation

Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, it is the responsibility of the applicant with a disability to request accommodation which he/she requires in order to participate in the application or examination process. The Montgomery Personnel Board reserves the right to require documentation of the need for accommodation under the ADA. In order to request accommodation in the application or testing process, contact the Personnel Director at (334) 625-2675.
