Job summary

Madison County Commission is seeking an experienced equipment operator to drive trucks and a range of heavy construction machinery for bridges, roads, and water projects. You will work under supervision, ensuring safe operation and performing basic maintenance while supporting crew tasks.

The role requires operating backhoes, trackhoes, graders, skid steers, and more, with a need to pass a DOT physical and hold a valid Alabama CDL or obtain within six months. Standard schedule is 7:00 a.m.

Qualifications

  • Must be able to operate trucks and a variety of heavy construction machinery used in bridges, roads, water pipes, and other structures.
  • Able to perform light maintenance tasks and basic equipment repairs.
  • Must understand written and oral instructions and judge roadworthiness per DOT regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Operate backhoe, trackhoe, motor grader, skidsteer, mini excavator, tractor and bushhog.
  • Transport heavy construction equipment using heavy duty trailers.
  • Perform light maintenance and minor repairs on equipment as needed.
  • Load and unload equipment and materials for delivery, service, or repair.
  • Work with crews performing various manual labor tasks and assist as required.

Job description

Under administrative supervision, employees in this class operate trucks and a limited variety of heavy construction machinery in the construction maintenance of bridges, roads, water pipes, and other structures. Employees in this class are responsible for the safe and efficient operation of all equipment they use, including minor repair and maintenance. Work is moderately complex in nature, conforming to the detailed instructions given by a supervisor, with inspections occurring during its progress and after completion.

  • Must be able to operate backhoe, trackhoe, motorgrader, skidsteer, mini excavator, tractor, and bushhog.
  • Transports heavy construction equipment using heavy duty, tractor-trailer, haulers including, flat bed and low-boy type trailers.
  • Performs light maintenance and field repairs on equipment and machinery as necessary.
  • Loads and unloads equipment and machinery.
  • Transports materials and equipment to be delivered, serviced, or repaired.
  • Works withcrews doing various manual labor tasks.
  • Performs other related work as required.
Education and Experience
  • Any combination of training and experience equivalent to completion of any level of primary or secondary education that did not result in the awarding of a high school diploma or an equivalency diploma.
Knowledge, Skill, and Ability
  • Working knowledge of the traffic laws, techniques, and procedures pertaining to the safe and efficient operation of trucks and equipment.
  • Skill in the operation of trucks, wheeled tractors, and other lighter equipment.
  • Skill to perform basic maintenance tasks.
  • Ability to understand written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to make judgments regarding road worthiness and compliance per D.O.T. regulations.
Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to communicate to other workers and supervisors, both by radio and in person.
  • Needs to be able to work in outdoor weather conditions.
  • Needs to be able to position oneself to stoop, kneel, or crawl on occasion.
  • Must be able to observe their surroundings.
  • Must be physically capable of performing strenuous manual labor in adverse weather conditions.
  • Must be able to see well enough to operate motor vehicles and equipment.
  • Must be physically capable of lifting 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to pass a D.O.T. commercial driver's physical.
  • Must be available for 24-hour on call duty for emergencies within assigned district.
Certifications or Licenses Required
  • Must hold a valid Alabama Commercial Driver's License (or obtain within six months of employment) and be insurable by the Madison County Commission's risk underwriters.
  • Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) will be obtained and reviewed annually.
  • Must be able to pass a DOT Commercial Driver's physical and drug screen.
  • Must be registered for the FMCSA DOT Clearinghouse if you have a CDL license.
Work Schedule
  • 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
  • Monday - Friday
