Job summary

City of North Myrtle Beach seeks an experienced individual to operate heavy construction equipment with close supervision. You will guide Trades Workers, train new operators, and participate in maintenance and repair of machinery.

Requirements include a high school diploma or GED, two years of equipment experience, and a valid CDL at hire. Physical ability to lift heavy items and work irregular hours is expected.

Responsibilities

  • Operate heavy equipment such as motor grader, backhoe, loader, and pavers.
  • Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on equipment.
  • Lead and train Trades Workers and other staff as needed.
  • Plan, assign, and review work for crews in construction and maintenance tasks.
  • Maintain maps and storm drainage records as required.
  • On-call availability 24 hours on rotating basis.

Job description

Under close supervision, operates several types of specialized and heavy construction and maintenance equipment requiring a high degree of skill and attention. Performs skilled and general labor as required when not operating equipment. Provides guidance and leadership to Trades Workers and others. Trains new employees in the operation and care of equipment.

  • Education: High school diploma or GED
  • Experience: Two years of experience operating heavy construction and maintenance equipment and performing related skilled work
  • Certifications:
    • Valid commercial driver's license at hire
  • Note: The City retains the right to determine equivalencies.
  • Any certifications not possessed at hire, must be obtained before the employee is removed from probation in order to continue employment with the City.

Must be physically able to operate dump trucks, tractors, dresser loader, rollers, motor grader, backhoe, track hoe, carpentry, masonry and asphalt tools, and numerous other small tools and equipment. Must be able to exert in excess of one hundred pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of fifty pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of twenty pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of ten to one hundred pounds.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Is responsible for the safe and effective operation of various types of heavy equipment in the performance of construction and maintenance projects such as motor grader, rubber tire backhoe, track backhoe, front-end loader, etc.

Operates equipment for performing duties such as precision grading, highway construction surveying, differential leveling, topographic surveying, etc.

Services and makes minor repairs and adjustments to equipment as needed; performs scheduled maintenance; checks fluids, oils and grease as specified; and reports any major equipment problems as required.

Plans, assigns, and reviews the work of Trades Workers and Motor Equipment Operators.

Uses rough carpentry, masonry and concrete finishing skills to complete new construction and maintenance.

Operates and maintains a vactor truck.

Maintains maps on City storm drainage.

Cleans storm drainpipe and catch basins.

Utilizes various hand tools in the performance of the job such as shovels, saws, mixer, drill, torch, concrete tools, etc.

Observes traffic control and safety devices as necessary to ensure safe working conditions and procedures.

Prepares necessary reports and logs as required by the department.

On call, available 24 hours on a rotating basis.

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Inspects asphalt, storm sewers, and road bases.

Assists Police in traffic control and barricades.

Assists crew with the placement of drainage pipe and asphalt, and construction of catch basins; assists the crew with street construction and maintenance.

Serves as Crew Leader when necessary.

Assists in the training of Motor Equipment Operators.

Runs paving machine.

Performs general and skilled labor in expediting specific duties when not operating equipment.

Assists in various types of duties in the sign shop.

Assists in the maintenance of bridge maintenance and repairs.

Performs other related duties as required.
